Cocktail Quiz NO.009

A fruity blend of gin, apple brandy, and apricot, served with no juice. Which cocktail am I ?

Reveal of 009 Quiz: Angel Face

The Angel Face cocktail made its debut in Harry Craddock’s 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book, although its exact origin remains a subject of debate. One theory suggests that it was created by Harry MacElhone, founder of Harry‘s New York Bar in Paris, on July 19, 1919, to celebrate the victory of World War I.

This claim is supported by the use of Calvados, a popular French apple brandy, which was readily available during a time when phylloxera had devastated European vineyards, leading to a shortage in traditional brandy production

Another theory proposes that the cocktail was named after Abe ”Angel Face“ Kaminsky, a notorious Prohibition-era mobster active in Detroit

Despite these differing origins, the cocktail is a simple yet bold mix of equal parts gin, Calvados, and apricot brandy. Craddock’s recipe instructs shaking the ingredients, likely to increase dilution and smooth out the strong alcohol flavors.

Mixing insight:

For the best results when mixing the Angel Face cocktail, pre-chill your glass to preserve the drink’s crispness. While traditionally shaken to increase dilution and smooth out the bold mix of gin, Calvados, and apricot brandy, modern methods often suggest stirring for a clearer and more refined cocktail. Stirring reduces over-dilution, but for those who prefer a softer touch, adding a splash of chilled water or apple juice can lighten the drink‘s boozy punch without compromising its spirit-forward character. Choose your method based on your desired texture and balance.
