The Angel Face cocktail made its debut in Harry Craddock’s 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book, although its exact origin remains a subject of debate. One theory suggests that it was created by Harry MacElhone, founder of Harry‘s New York Bar in Paris, on July 19, 1919, to celebrate the victory of World War I.


This claim is supported by the use of Calvados, a popular French apple brandy, which was readily available during a time when phylloxera had devastated European vineyards, leading to a shortage in traditional brandy production

Another theory proposes that the cocktail was named after Abe ”Angel Face“ Kaminsky, a notorious Prohibition-era mobster active in Detroit​
