Barules is Back:Elevating Shanghai’s Cocktail Scene

Barules has made a highly anticipated comeback in Shanghai’s Jing’an district, under the helm of veteran bartender Sam Kuan. The revamped menu blends fan-favorite drinks with tributes to cocktail legend Dick Bradsell and introduces a unique, highly customizable experience where guests can choose from over 100 ingredients.

Barules, a standout in Shanghai’s cocktail scene, has made its grand return in Jing’an under the direction of veteran bartender Sam Kuan. Known for his nearly two decades of experience, Sam originally launched Barules in 2014, when the bar’s speakeasy concept—with an entrance hidden behind a red telephone booth—took the city by storm. While the original location closed in 2020, the new Barules reopens with a refreshed approach, moving away from its old speakeasy charm to embrace a warm, wood-toned aesthetic that embodies the heart of the bar’s spirit.

Despite the changes, Barules still delivers what patrons have always loved—exquisite cocktails and warm, attentive service. The cocktail program combines beloved signature drinks from the original menu with tributes to cocktail legend Dick Bradsell, creator of classics like the Espresso Martini and Bramble. The new menu also elevates the drinking experience by offering highly customizable options. Guests can choose from an extensive list of over 100 ingredients—ranging from fruits, herbs, and spices to more adventurous flavors like soy sauce, seaweed, and croissant—allowing for a tailored cocktail experience starting at ¥88.

Barules' innovative concept, combined with its vibrant atmosphere, firmly places it among the top five bars in Shanghai, offering an unforgettable experience for cocktail enthusiasts.
