This is a no-prong strainer specifically designed for Boston shakers.
Traditional strainers typically have protruding "prongs" that allow them to rest parallel to the rim of a shaker. In contrast, this strainer features a no-prong design, lacking any protruding parts, which means it cannot be fixed to the rim like conventional strainers.
Thanks to its no-prong design, the strainer needs to be inserted diagonally into the shaker during use. While pouring, it effectively presses down on the ice, preventing it from moving or splashing. This ensures a smoother and quieter pouring process.
This strainer features a grooved design in the middle section, allowing it to securely latch onto steel tins. This reduces the need for finger pressure when straining ice or performing rolling/throwing techniques.
This no-prong strainer is generally wider than standard strainers, with a flexible spring that accommodates various sizes of Boston shakers, making it highly versatile and user-friendly.
Additionally, the no-prong strainer is ideal for the throwing/rolling technique in cocktail preparation.
Spring Elasticity
The spring is arguably the core of a strainer. This vintage-style strainer has been meticulously designed with enhanced spring hardness and resilience. This ensures a secure fit on shaker tins of any rim size or mixing glasses, providing a tight and stable seal without slipping.
Spring Tightness
The closely spaced spring coils effectively filter out ice and other ingredients, ensuring a smooth pour without unwanted debris.
Durable Material + Long Handle Design
Made with thicker materials, this strainer is heavier than standard strainers. Its longer handle allows you to press it securely into the cup with ease, preventing it from slipping during use. This ensures confidence and precision when pouring cocktails, making the process smoother and more reliable.
How to Perform the Throwing Technique:
- Prepare two containers (usually Boston shaker tins). Fill one with ice and insert the strainer at an angle to secure the ice.
- Pour the prepared drink into the other container.
- Hold the drink-filled container high and pour the liquid into the ice-filled container, alternating the pour between the two containers.
This technique allows the drink to mix thoroughly with air, enhancing its texture and creating a smoother cocktail. It also avoids excessive dilution caused by shaking, as it minimizes ice melt during the process.
This strainer not only stands out for its unique design but also meets the high standards of stability and versatility demanded by professional bartenders. It is an essential tool for creative cocktail crafting.

Before You Buy – Stainless Steel Products
Before You Buy – Stainless Steel Products
All items are brand new. Because these stainless steel products are handcrafted and undergo quality inspection, some pieces may show very, very minor, natural surface marks—this is normal for handmade items and does not affect their quality or functionality. Please note that returns cannot be accepted for these natural variations.
Compared to Boston shakers, these barely noticeable marks are more likely to appear on cobbler shakers(because there are more stainless steel contact surfaces), while the entire BIRDY product line has an even lower chance of showing such imperfections.
